Ghost shrimp arrived!

Post by dstringf »

Yay for me! I got my shipment of ghost shrimp today. About a quarter of them were carrying eggs, so I tried to put as many of the egg carriers into my shrimp only tank. The rest went into my main tank. The fish seem to be leaving the live ones alone, but are munching on the few that didn't make the journey (I had a HUGE order, from a breeder that sells them strictly as live food). I do have 2 eels in my main tank that I do expect them to eat some of the shrimp, which is actually why I went with a large order of the ghost's. Sad to say, the eels only seem to eat live food.

Along with my order came 2 stragglers. The "freebies" included a snail of some sort (put him in my loach tank, just in case he decides to multiply), and what appears to be a Siamese Algae Eater. The SAE is very small, about the same size as the average ghost shrimp. I put him in the shrimp tank for now. Do you think he is safe long term? Will he eat any hatchlings?

BTW, watching the ghosts eat is so cool. They are eating flake food with a passion. You can see them swallow and watch the different color food go thru them! They are also a lot more "Active" than my other shrimp. They run around, grab food, do whatever.

Heavenly Fish, located in sourthern NJ. I won them via auction on Aquabid.com. The ghosts were listed under "Food - Live". Paid 9 cents a piece for them with shipping. That was in bulk though. :)

According to the sticky post, it says don't inquire about shrimp for sale, or list shrimp for sale. This clearly doesn't fall into either one of those categories and should be safe. :)

So now that it's been a few days, what kind of mortality rate are you seeing?

Except for the few that didn't make it in the first place, I haven't seen any dead shrimp in either tank. In my shrimp tank, its pretty easy to see that they are doing great. My other tank with the eels is another story. Since the eels eat live shrimp, and my other fish in that tank are quick to eat any dead shrimp, I can't really say for certain. For the most part, they seem to be doing pretty good though.
