Mustafa mossball with baby and bud
Mustafa mossball with baby and bud
Babies are hatching and mossball is budding. You can see a baby mossball already detached at the base of the parent, and the bright spot towards the center is another bud getting ready to detach. 15 babies are trying to wriggle free from their moms. Pretty good for a Monday! :-D

Love that mossball pic! Congrats! I got one about 4(?) years ago now, it has produced quite a few buds, the largest appears to be about 1/4 the size of a mature mossball.

The moss ball baby is pretty big then! Mine are all little dots still after about a year. :)

Awesome! Thanks for the picture! Some "buds" are larger than others because some buds stay on the "mother" for longer (months, years?) while others detach much earlier. This is truly a fascinating plant.

I never knew that mossballs reproduced like that. I thought just little pieces broke off or got torn off and then slowly grew.

DOH! I just realized I titled that mossball pic with the wrong name and I can't see how to edit it. I'm sorry! It's a MUSTAFA mossball!

Is that a different type from a Marimo?

I basically tore off some parts of my moss balls and they grew just fine. I guess I'm too fierce.

It's the one that is sold here by Mustafa. It grows in brackish water unlike the common type found in pet/fish shops.

And yes, it's a completely different plant. Marimo balls just turn into a mess of overgrown hair algae in Supershrimp tanks and don't grow and bud tiny baby balls like this (not even in freshwater).
