macroalgae is yellow. Is this dead or alive? should I throw this out and buy new? Tried to insert picture and wasn't able.

Sometimes yellow doesn't mean dead. If it starts turning clear, then it's dead

I've had mine maybe a month and its turned white, my tank now has algae.

Looks like your macro alage is not getting any nutrients. A description of your tank set up would be helpful.i

I started my tank about 5 weeks ago. I put 2 pellets of fish food in there and dosed the 4 gallons of water with water cycling stuff. That's all i have done other than added the needed amount of salt. The pellets are just two tiny piles of mush, and I've been meaning to syphon them out. I mentioned the algae growth only because that should be a sign I'm about ready for shrimp.

There's no food for the algae to feed upon. There's no iron to keep it green. If they tank were up and the shrimp in there that would be a start. The shrimp would feed and poop which would be the fertilizer for the algae.

Just click on the "Attachments" tab under the area where you type your message/post and attach the pictures. Without pictures it's impossible to say what's going on. But generally, I would put the plant away from directly under your light until it is used to the new conditions. And, yes, once the shrimp are in there everything should get better over time. This plant can recover from the tiniest fragment, so if you tank has the right conditions, there is usually no need to buy a new one. The old fragments will grow if they are still alive.
