Jar Tank

Hey shrimp folks,

I got one of those tiny ecospheres a while back. It died off, but I left it alone for 6 months an eventually a new shrimp hatched out of nowhere. I've since learned that the ecospheres are pretty unpleasant for the shrimp so I'd like to set up something a little more comfortable.

I do like the sphere aesthetic, so I'd like to find something spherical. Ideally something about a foot in diameter. I've been looking at bubble vases like https://www.amazon.com/CYS-EXCEL-Height ... 0068NZVIY/ but ideally I'll like to cap it so that dust n' things don't fall inside.

I've also been looking at round jars like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SOS5YG/.

Anyone know of a nice spherical glass container with a smallish opening that I cold put a lid over?

Another question: how many shrimp can different size containers support? 1 gal? 3 gal?

The 2 gallon Montana jar is perfect. I believe the handle on the lid can be removed leaving a small hole for proper air exchange. If not, it would be easy to drill a couple of small holes.

Please be sure to read the how to set up a supershrimp tank section found elsewhere on this site to ensure success.

A 2 gallon jar can easily handle a 100 shrimp. Though you would want to start with maybe 10 to 20, some snails from this site and some macroalgae from the site too. Over time if basically left alone, evaporation loss topped of with distilled water, a natural algae and bio film food source, they will breed, and you can achieve good numbers with not much effort on your part.

Thanks sliphorn. I spent some trawling the internet for what I was looking for but couldn't find any nice spherical containers that cost less than $200. I've gone with the jar.

I ordered the salt, substrate, algae, algaeball, and some lava rocks this evening so I can get the cycling going. I'll grab some snails and shrimp in a few weeks.

I've also ordered some glass beads to spruce up the substrate some. I'm hoping that since they're glass they'll be inert and therefore safe for all the inhabitants.

It sounds like you're on your way. Do you have a calcium source to act as a Ph buffer?

Oh, yep. Got the Calcium Carbonate rocks as well. All the pre-animal stuff. Good eye

Got my stuff today so got my tank partially set up. I'm going to some lava rock tomorrow and a few glass beads for color.

We'll let it cycle for now!

I built a little structure out of the lava rocks that I got and added some glass beads for colour.

Now I'm looking forward to a splash of green so that I can get some shrimp in there!

BTW, does anyone know how to deal with bubbles on the rocks. I dried out the rocks a bit so the glue would work, and then let the glue set for a day so the water drained out of them. Now there are bubbles sticking to the side and poking & prodding them isn't dislodging them

The bubbles will eventually disappear on their own or break loose and rise.

I'm planning to get 20 shrimp. I've been seeing that aquarium types take various steps to acclimate animals to the new environment of the tanks, e.g. letting the baggy with the the animal inside it float on the tank water or drip acclimation, etc. What's needed with the supershrimp?

How about adding my ecosphere survivor? Should I add the contents of the sphere into the tank, or just transfer the shrimp and branch thinger? Should I do it before or after the shrimp that I order?

These shrimp don't seem to need much acclimation. People say that if the salinity is equal and the temperature is close , then it's just a matter of dumping them in. They're hardy little buggers.

Yeah, not much acclimation needed. Just make sure they are temperature adjusted (float bag in tank, or just put the bag on top of tank if there is no heater in the tank) and then just release the shrimp in your tank. You can transfer the survivor over as long as the temp in its enclosure is close enough to the temp in the new tank.
