Soooo, I bought a 10 pack of snails. I didn't want a snail explosion in my small tank. I just wanted one little guy to help clean things up a bit in the sand.
When the snails arrived, I took 1 out to put in my small jar and put the other 9 in my emergency back up tank. It's been about 2 months (I think).
I look in the tank today, and lo and behold, there's a damn baby snail in there!! Are these things asexual or did I manage to grab the one pregnant snail? /sigh
Oh yes... Probably more snails than shrimp. Le sigh. Lol
And they keep mussin' up my decor like I was worried about. Had a shell propped up again the rock and they knocked it down. Good thing no shrimpies got stuck underneath. Brats!

Yeah, snails can definitely rearrange things over time by sifting through the substrate. That's why it is not possible to create a "hilly" substrate either as the snails will even out the substrate almost perfect over time everywhere in the tank. In any case, just stop feeding and you'll see less of them. They are not as hardy as the shrimp, so they tend to die off slowly over time, even though never completely. Their decaying bodies will create enough nutrients for algae and bacterial grow to feed the shrimp for a long time. Sad, but that's how nature works.
