Coolest thing saw... they were walking upside down on the bio-film. The darn high nitrate is good for something. It seemed to have worked with the 72F slightly heated water to create the bio-film overnight.
Where the shrimps skimmed you can see the tracks in the bio film. Like Olympic Ice gliders.
Lost 5 shrimp through this one week. Darn. I guess I’ll need an order of ten shrimp. :/ this time no losses. Fingers crossed
..
Let the tank settle by leaving things alone, then order some more shrimp. If you stop fiddling with the tank it will eventually be okay. After reading your posts it is apparent to me that you create problems. KISS principle, please.

Thank you for the kind reminder. Pandemic times stuck at home having me try and perfect this tank with the perfect PH etc but you’re right I’m over-managing the tank.
Doing more reading “Opae-ula have very sensitive nervous systems and are known to die from shock when a tank falls or if subjected to a very loud noise.”

Hahaha good advice. Temperature below freezing and dont worry I am very sore (hands can barely lift without pain) because I had to shovel my car out after that snow storm in jersey, so I am incapacitated from doing the shrimps harm.
So since I can’t go out I am reading this “ Keep in mind, that nitrates (that are always in our tank) are acidic” ( from https://aquariumbreeder.com/water-param ... rimp-tank/ ) explains WHY THE distilled water mixed with instant ocean salt had a lower than 8 PH it was because of the contamination of high nitrates from the “seeding filter material”.

I do not remember if you have a source of calcium to buffer the water. Egg shells, aragonite, cuttle bone are examples. A small amount of any of those are needed to help keep the pH stable.
..
Yes I have a bunch of argonite shells that’s now over weeks slowly stabilized the PH to 8.4. At first when it wasn’t having an immediate impact, (and in the midst of frustration) I went out and bought a bag of argonite sand also but I couldn’t find a mesh bag with holes small enough to house the sand in a separate compartment of the aquarium. So I just followed everyone’s advice and left it to be. Sand is still unopened. Maybe I should use it in my freshwater tank for a salt and pepper look but all my aquariums have black sand and I’m not sure if that’s the look for me.
Have a question: If shrimp sits motionless is it dead? I have one shrimp that is sitting in a corner with a piece of biofilm in its claws just frozen in place. The hands are not moving. Could be molting per article here https://www.shrimpscience.com/articles/ ... -problems/
