Dead shrimp?

Post by Spikeschilde »

Hello all
My husband opened my ecosphere last night and we transferred my 4 shrimp into their new 1 gallon home (cycled for a month with algae ball and snails.)
One of the shrimp started acting very strangely afterwards, was still very red, but started swimming upside down for a few seconds then immediately falling to the bottom of the tank. He hid behind one of my lava rocks and hasn't come out.
At first, he was moving his little back legs once every 10 minutes or so, but this morning he's stopped doing that.
I'm assuming he's died, but he's still bright red. I would assume if he died, he would've turned pale.
Is he dead? Should I remove him? I'll have to take out all my lava rocks to get to him and I'm worried about upsetting (again) the 3 shrimp that are left.
Thank you!

Leave 'em for the next 12 hours and see if they've moved at all. If they happen to move within those 12 hours, I'd say to keep checking in 'em every once in awhile. If not, I'd say remove their body. Also, regarding your question about the shrimp color and death: my first batch of 20 shrimp, which happened to be bright red, all died (I've concluded later that it was because of the lid I had, which leaked rust contaminated water into their water). When they died, they still managed to retain their red/pink color, so their color isn't a good indication on whether they've died, but rather if they react to water movement or are still mobile. Wish the little guy the best.
