Macroalgae?

Planning on getting supershrimp, and want to minimize number of shipments, are macroalgae really necessary? Are there alternatives that I could find at a petstore locally?

I have a tank with lava rock only and the shrimp appear to be thriving. I also have another tank where I have brackish chaeto that I purchased on eBay. I like having the greenery in the tank but it is also one more thing to worry about.
