Two years going strong…but no babies

Post by Cuon »

Hello all! I’ve been having some.. issues.. convincing my little lovelies to breed. They’ve been with me nearly two years now, only ever had a single female berried once, and she dropped all her eggs within the week. Never seen one even berried other than that.
There are females and males in the tank, and the females have been saddled the entire time I’ve had them. All in all, 17 shrimps in the tank if I recall correctly.
Here’s their tank, ~7 gallons with a salinity of 0.010 (fairly terrible picture but you get the idea):

They have plenty of hiding places in the lava rock and a nice but small clump of chaeto. The light is dim but still enough for the chaeto. They are housed with a population of Mylasian trumpet snails that I pick out every now and then when they get a bit too promiscuous. I only scrape the two “front” sides of the tank every three or four months.

There’s been struggles with this tank, specifically with chaeto because I seem to have quite the black thumb for it. There’s been two occasions where the chaeto rotted from the inside out and released unknown but presumably noticeable amounts of ammonia into the water. I lost one shrimp in the first incident, have not lost another since and am doing my best to keep this third chaeto alive (including adding mts and turning the light wayyyy down.)

And I get it! I get that they’re shrimp and they’re sensitive, but…. I feel like I’m missing something here. I don’t do water changes unless I have to, only top ups. The tank has been stable for months and I’m monitoring the chaeto closely to make sure it’s not doing anything. I bother the tank as little as possible. I don’t even feed them to give them as much peace as possible! From everything I’m reading, I’m doing everything right, but I suspect there’s a missing piece somewhere.

Hi Cuon! What substrate are you using? I saw a lot of growth on the surfaces of your tank. If you are not feeding them at all/much, where did all the growth come from? Did you feed them a lot before? The excessive growth could be nutrients leaching from your substrate or rocks.

I have never really fed them. I did put a bit of spirulina in after making the original post. They didn’t eat it.
It’s odd, I’ve never seen the same algaes take that I see in other enclosures. I don’t think it’s growth as much as waste, I try to clean it up every 4-6 months with a pipette or it gets real bad.

As for substrate I actually… don’t know. I purchased all this from a local keeper who auctioned them off at my local fish club. I have added a few rocks, but the substrate and big rock are all original and I suppose I just assumed they were fine.

Did you wash the substrate before putting it in? Did you rinse or soak the rocks? If not, then that's where the nutrients are coming from. Unfortunately, there's really nothing you can do besides waiting it out. Just don't feed at all until all the algae are gone. Keep thinning out the macroalgae as that's your nutrient export mechanism. You could, of course, establish another tank with "clean" rocks and substrate and transfer the shrimp there if you do not want to wait.

I did not wash them. I guess that’s the issue then, although you’d think they’d stop by now. How long should it take to be done? I do have an 11 gallon cube I could upgrade them to, but I really just want them as happy and peaceful as possible. I am a bit confused as to why that would be the reason they wouldn’t breed, though.
