Sudden Loss

Post by beckypyyeung »

I got two batches of baby tigers in early April. I had a total of over fifty of them. I still had over fifty in the first week. Then the number dropped gradually. I had 30+ and then 20+. Last night I had 10+ but today I have only two ! I really can't understand what's going on. They have been living with seven one-month old cherry babies. I can't see any dead bodies after such a huge loss. Where are they?

I was looking forward to seeing baby tigers with stripes, but unfortunately I can't see anything and they've gone :?

Sorry to hear that, Becky! Tiger shrimp hatchlings (and most other shrimp hatchlings) are *very* sensitive to water conditions. Even if the adults are doing fine, the hatchlings will die.

Are you using a water conditioner that neutralizes chlorine and chloramine? I found that this is essential for the survival of shrimp hatchlings, especially in areas where chloramine is used (which seems to be most areas in the US now...Hong Kong might differ) as it stays in the water forever and you can't really "age" the water before adding it to the tank as you can with chlorine treated water. I personally use Seachem Prime and it's the best of its kind there is (in my humble opinion). You might want to give that a try.

Take care,

Thanks very much for your advice Mustafa. :? I'll try the neutralizer. In fact I used to let tap water expose under sunlight by the windowsill for a day before I pour it into my tank.

I wish to find out the cause of their disappearance so as to avoid it next time. Here I have three problems:

(1) They worked well in the first ten days. I don't understand why they didn't die earlier (I'm not cursing them);
(2) So far I've never seen any dead bodies, that's strange;
(3) I wonder if my one-and-a-half-month-old cherry babies ate them up. However, I wonder why they didn't eat them earlier.

Oh, the last two baby tigers have gone. As expected, I can't see any tigers today. :(

I was full of hope when I saw over 50 babies and worried about how to deal with 50 adult tigers later. It turns out that it's a false hope.
