Has anyone tried breeding saltwater shrimp?

Post by theshrimp_123 »

Hi,

Has anyone tried to breed any saltwater shrimp? Has anybody been sucessful in breeding and raising the young? If so, what species? (mysis don't count!) I have tried Coral banded, Blood red, Scarlet, Peppermint, and the glass anemone shrimp,(since in same family of ghosts, i assume they breed similarly).I have not been succesful.

I have no experience with pet trade or ornamental marine shrimp. But I've reared the larvae of the marine shrimp Penaeus vannamei, which is generally the kind of shrimp you might find on your dinner plate, if you eat shrimp. The rearing is quite easy for this species because the larvae progress quite quickly (about two weeks, give or take a few days) to the post larval stage. But marine microalgae or diatoms are needed, especially to keep the very young stages fed. But then, the algae isn't very hard to culture anyway.

Getting this species to spawn however, can be difficult. It isn't necessarily complicated, but I don't know off the top of my head exactly what steps are taken to have them spawn, and how to carry them out. And, it involves mutilating the female by cutting off one of her eye stalks ! This has an endocrinological effect and spurs ovulation. Certain lighting/darkness requirements exist, and I'm not sure whether it can be done in a lab/home setting or if the spawning actually requires a very large pool like the broodstock pool that I saw at one aquaculture facility.

Of course, this far from means that all marine shrimp require similar procedures, or have larvae that are as easy to rear as this Penaeid species.
