Moina and Red Cherry in the same tank?

Post by palton »

I have a tank for breeding moina (fishfood) and would like to have some shrimps as well if its's possible.

Will my Red Cherry Shrimps eat Moina if I mix them in the same tank?

I imagine that the shrimp would ignore the waterfleas. Red Cherries are not predators.

Thank's for your input. I will try this setup. The Shrimps will hopefully have a more peaceful life in that environment, without any fishes, better than today..

The Red cherry shrimps may even have the possibility reproduce with sucess in that environment?

As long as they are well fed.

We just got Red Cherries so I can't really comment on their predatory nature but I've seen our Bumblebee shrimp grab a small daphnia and start picking/munching on it. Don't know if Bumblebees are more predatory than Red Cherries. However, it is a small shrimp so I doubt one or two daphnias a day will deplete your moina culture--they reproduce fast enough to not be adversely affected if 1-2 small ones get eaten by your shrimp. If you keep your shrimp well fed, they won't need to eat too many moina anyway. We keep daphnia in all our shrimip tanks since they clear the water of any floating algae and other floating microscopic things (and I just like daphnias anyway). However, if you do put daphnias (moina) in your shrimp tank, you will have to make sure they have sufficient food they can eat.

None of the algae eating shrimp are predatory. The don't even eat their own hatchlings, which are even smaller than Moina.
