Two photo periods

Post by flash69x »

To keep the CO2 build-up down so it doesn't affect PH I have thought about having the lights come one twice durring the day. Instead of 12 hours on and 12 off for the lights I was thinking of doing a 6 hour cycle. This way the plants still have lights for 12 hours of the day but there is only a 6 hour period for the CO2 to build up. Would this have a negative impact on my shrimp?

I would think that this would mess up their "internal clock." A lot of aquarium animals are from the tropics and subtropics and the closer you get to the equator the more the day and night cycle approaches 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. I would not mess around with that. Although there is a chance that it might not affect the shrimp if there is enough ambient light around, it might affect their reproductive system if the light cycles are too extreme.

It may also have an adverse effect on the plants since they must ramp up the photosynthesis process twice a day rather than once.
