I recently started to change my substrate out for coarse, medium grade all-black. It's a slow process, wherein I remove a handful and replace it with the new (cleaned) substrate.
I bought it at the local pet store, and it was intended for aquarium use.
Those shrimps are so curious I begin to fear for their life. They swim toward my hand. *laugh* I have to shoo them away, every time I reach in there. Especially when I'm trying to feed my frogs, they'll chase after the hand with the bloodworms. I added a handful of gravel, and all the shrimps rushed towards the new handful, and began feeling it up. I was impressed with how curious they were, and paid it no mind.
And, today is blood worm day for the frogs, so I go in and feed them, and as usual each shrimp made off with a single blood worm. The worms are usually too big for them, and stick out of their mouthes like sausages while they suck out the inside.
And, just now, I noticed that my shrimps are developing black pigmentation on their insides.

I don't think they're unwell, they aren't acting unwell. I'm just curious as to what brought that about. I do notice that they tend to color up depending on what they eat. Yesterday was a fasting day, and all the shrimps ate algae, so they turned green.
What do you suppose caused these guys to turn black? The bloodworms? Maybe I simply never noticed them turning black after bloodworms, since I usually go 'lights out' after I feed them.
Huh.
