I've lurked for awhile and just got my shrimp today so I figured it's about time to join eh?
I got 4 red cherries(which stayed a beautiful red even after being brought home)and 2 red nose shrimp. I would of got a few more cherries instead but they are out until after Christmas cause of me allready heh. The cherries seem to have inhabitated my sunken ship .
Here's my question. Would a red nose shrimp female and male both have red noses? I noticed when they got home only one has the long red nose. The both look fairly similar and both have the same type of markings on their tail from what I've observed so far. I haven't got a great look of both of them close together yet though...
One other question , one of my RCS seems to like riding one of my apple snails backs. He went slightly above the water while on the shell. Is this okay for shrimp? I'd imagine they'd jump back in if there was a problem. He's decided to go back under water level for now at least lol. Last thing, what should I be feeding them? I only have one live plant(Moss ball)in right now and two fake ones. I hear ghost shrimp like blood worms(which I have lots of for my african dwarf frogs in a different tank)but not sure about the ones I have.
I've no experience with Red Nose shrimp, but most of the shrimp I've got are not picky eaters. The red cherries like flake food, I use flake that has algae as the 1st ingredient. I've also fed microwaved collard greens, and dead oak leaves. Oak leaves are good as you can just leave one in there until it is gone and theycan hide under it or nibble or both.
One of the key things seems to be a rock-steady pH. Until I got that under control I had a lot of trouble keeping cherries. Beyond that is is pretty standard. No chlorine, keep the metal ions really low, especially copper. Give them places to hang and hide.
Thanks for the answer on food , my red noses still are alive, well those are the only ones I've seen since I got home lol. I'm sure the rest are fine too just hiding out, none of my fishies passed on. I've been gone for a week so sorry for the late reply, had someone taking care of my tanks for me except for the past 2 days.
If anyone could answer about the nose question I'd appreciate it!
Yes, both the males and females have the elongated rostrum. However, lots of times you will have other species mixed into the red nose shrimp imports that have a similar body shape but no elongated rostra.
