Fish that are safe with shrimp?

Post by DatDamWuf »

OK, I am hooked on shrimp. I have given up on having Discus in this new tank. I've tried to search this topic and evidently didn't know what to search on. Does anyone have a list of fish they think are OK to keep with shrimp? I have kuhli's and Oto's but would like at least one species that swims the mid tank. I don't care for tetra's, they are boring to me, any thoughts?

thanks, ~D

What kind of shrimp? In my experience, anything but the smallest tetras and Rasboras will eat mature Red Cherries, and ANY fish will probably go at the juveniles. I would go with something bigger than Bee shrimp or cherries if you want to keep fish.

Shrimp-Safe Fish

Post by Angel501 »

Shrimp do, unfortunately, seem to be a tasty treat for many fish :( My amano shrimp are fine with my angel fish, blood-fin tetras, ottos and SAEs in my heavily planted 55 gal.

I keep red cherry shrimp in a heavily planted 12 gal Nano cube at work, with no fish, and they are breeding like crazy, so I have to thin them out periodically. I've tried bringing them home to the big tank, but my angel has learned what the little box in my hand means when I walk into the room. I do have a few hardy souls that have survived and are doing very well under the protection of the plants, but I'm now talking with a local fish store about my extras.

My ottos and SAEs don't bother the full-grown cherrys but the SAEs are likely to nibble on any little shrimp babies that they find. I suspect that the tetras, which are new to the tank, will also.

I wouldn't risk it.

Bottom line: shrimp do best in a species only tank.

Almost every fish will eat juvenile shrimp (maybe except otocinclus) and in a multiple shrimp species tank, one species will eventually outcompete the other.

If you really need a great algae eater in a tank with fish then try nerite snails.

I have freshwater so Nerite Snails wouldn't work. Can you tell me of any freshwater snails that won't be bothered by Black Neon Tetras, or Cories?

There are Nerite snails that are freshwater. For example here are some.

They just won't reproduce in freshwater.

Also, they'll be perfectly fine with black neons and cory cats and they're great algae eaters.

Is there an Apple Snail that won't consume live plants in a tank?

If you feed apple snails with something they like better, like steamed collards, they will leave the other plants along, but if they get hungry, all bets are off.
