Hey guys,
I have a beautiful female freshwater glass shrimp who's been doing really well in my tank. She's grown a ton over the past few months and has recently developed a green saddle. I've become very fond of her and I was wondering--is there any way to tell males and females apart, excluding the saddle? I'd really like to breed her, and if there's a way I could be sure to pick out a male for her, I'd really like to know about it.
Thanks.

One sure fire way to get both sexes is to buy a group of 10-15.. Glass shrimp are one of the least expensive shrimps to buy so a large group isn't going to set you back a bunch of cash. Other than that you can buy a few shrimps you see that apear to be males and hope for the best.. but you might end up with a few loanly females. I really suggest keeping them in a group though. Good luck

You can usually get them for around 25 cents each if you find a place that sells live feeder food for fish. That is where I got mine. The animals in those places are generally adults and the smaller ones are usually the males.
They are far more interesting in groups and you can put quite a few in a small tank. I have about a dozen in a 5 gallon tank and this has been going since November of last year.
Raising the larva is a challenge but can be done. You can search out my ghost shrimp posts. You need live microfood for them and absolutley no fish that would eat the larva.
