Questions for ALL Those With Shrimps. Out of Curiousity

I'm just curious as to a few questions for all of the people that keep shrimps and enjoy them so much. Give me an input on at least one if not all. The questions are:

1) How did you first get into shrimps and what were your first shrimps and if possible how did it went the first time?

2) How do you support your hobby?

3) What did your families and friends think of your hobby?

4) Why do you think you enjoy your shrimps so? In other words, what makes them fascinating to you?

As for me I'll answer number one: I first got into shrimps about a week ago, very new but so far have been pretty successful keeping them in a mildly/newly planted aquarium with guppies that at first got a little too curious about the shrimps. I mainly got them because of my mom, she hated the angle fish that I bought her and said that she wanted something bright and red. So I got pissed off and said " it's the thought that counts! If you want red I'll give you red!" And so I surfed the internet and found a friend that gave me a bunch of plants, a few cherry shrimps (red), a few red ramshorn snails (red as u can see), and I'm planning to get a red betta (which I hear to be shrimp eaters so I dunno). I also chose cherry shrimps because they are easier to raise then other species from what I get at.

1. I got interested in shrimp when I first saw them. I guess my first would be ghost shrimp back when I was like 7. I used to buy them from walmart on ly to see that the next day they were all gone( I kept them with a goldfish). I soon started onto a bigger tank and one thing leads to another, I found Cherry red shrimp and saw how colorful they were. A friend gave me a group of 12 juvies. It went/is going well. My shrimp have been breeding quickly. I don't have that many though, I actually ended up with less. Right now I have 7- 3 females, 4 males. 2 of my females have their eggs *cross my fingers* hoping they hatch and come to breeding age quickly.

2. I support my hobby with red envelope money, I'm trying to get a job

3. My parents hate me keeping any kind of live animal . I still go about buying things and eventually hope to get RCS, they are just so darn expensive!!! When I get RCS I hope I can get some c grade cause they are cheaper and I'm not trying to go for quality, just cause they are so cute looking . Friends think I'm obsessive but I must agree with them

4. I just love my shrimp for themselves. I like everything they do. I like their awesome colors, I like watching them eat, swim, stand, do anything.

My story is pretty strange. My 10 year old son asked me for a Triops Kit. We got really good at keeping these "tadpole shrimp". I wanted to raise live food for them and went to a pond to catch some daphnia to raise for them. In the pond water was some wild Riccia which started growing like crazy.

I was looking for a way to keep algea off the Riccia and found out about Red Cherry Shrimp and Amanos. Got hooked on them big time and started keeping shrimp for themselves as they don't really do a super job at eating enough algae. Then came the Bamboos and the M. Rosenbergii.

And yes, we still have the Triops. Right now I have a tank with about 9 (they move too fast to count) 6 days old.

Hello

My first interest in shrimp was 25 years ago.

I went to my lfs to see what was new ,and the lady said , we have shrimp.

To my amazement they were very interesting to watch.

So, I bought what she had.

They were called "Zebra Shrimp" orangish red and white stripes about 3/4 of a inch.

They lasted about a month, so , I went back to my lfs to try again.

She told me, they were shipped to her by mistake, and she could not order them for me.

Now to the present.

I started keeping shrimp again, Thanks to this web-site and the helpful individuals who belong to it.

1) I had some ghost shrimp when I first got into fish, then came Amanos, then cherries. The ghost shrimp didn't like our warm tanks too much, but the Amanos did well, and the cherries started to breed. Seeing the baby shrimp was wonderful, for some reason I got really attached to them.

2) A full-time job to pay the electricity bills, and occasional fish/plant/shrimp sales at local clubs to pay for new plants, etc.

3) My partner is also into fish/shrimp, so it's not a big problem. Most of my family is on another continent, so it doesn't really bother them. My step-daughter has labeled us the "Fish People."

4) I love the baby shrimp; I love the cherries' red color, and the Amano's antics. They're generally a lot of fun to watch.
