Several weeks ago, I had the opportunity to see my Amanos breed. I don't know if this has been documented here or in literature, but it was fascinating:
The female climbed up onto a piece of driftwood and at the same time, all of the males started darting around the tank like nuts. THen they all began to decend on her, and in about 30 secods there were over 15 males on her in a big ball. I saw one male underneath that seemed to be "the one", and then about 5 minutes of this, the males all sprung off her violently in the same instant, darted around the tank again for a few seconds, and went back to grazing.
A few days later, I noticed the egg clutch. She has been carrying them now for about 3 weeks.
I guess for the breeders in the group, I should mention the details of my tank: pH=6.8-6.9, GH=80ppm, KH=70ppm, NH3 NO2 NO3 all non detectable, temp 84F, light 12 hours a day...they bred about half way into the light cycle.
Saw my C. japonica breed - now has eggs

The male deposits a spermataphore on the underside of the female that fertilizes the eggs.
