tank size for shrimps?

Post by cyber_ecco »

Would a 5 gallon tank be sufficient for breeding shrimps? Or should I have something bigger? I got a 5 gallon I am thinking of using for breeding some cherries. Thinking of just setting up with bare bottom and some java moss. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Gord.

I'm not happy with 5 gallon tanks and just use them for isolation, baby rearing, etc. 10 gallon tanks are much better. Small tanks are too hard to keep the water parameters in spec and you end up killing your shrimp.

I have both a 10 and a 5 1/2g shrimp tank. I think that a 5g is acceptable provided you do more frequent waterchanges. A 10g is better, though. I use sponge filters on both. My 5 1/2 is just used for holding females with eggs and baby shrimp. It has a very small bioload. If you were going to purchase a tank(which I realize that you already have the 5g, this is just a side note), standard 10g in my experience, tend to be cheaper or the same price as 5g tanks.
