Ich treatment follow up FYI

Post by ratrvt »

So I "winged it" with introducing my bamboo shrimp back into the community tank after treating with QuICK Cure. The recommendations on the salt treatment are great but I already began the chemical treatment.
I changed all filter components (including new charcoal), added friendly bacteria and Stress Coat after a 25% water change, raised the temp a little, added a tiny bit of salt (as recommended in several places for tropical fish), aerated the water, waited a day and added him to the tank with my fingers crossed. The little guy is fine and actually seems Very happy to be back in his home tank - he "pinked up" and began scraping the rocks right away (the tank must have seemed in need of serious cleaning since his absence).

I still don't know where the copper is that those of you who replied to my initial post were concerned about - there is no copper in QuICK Cure - just malachite green and formalin.

First off, it is good that you were able to take care of your Ick problem. Also, it is great that your shrimp is doing so well. This might be due to you water changes, the fact that there was no copper in the Ick treatment or something else you did.

I would not personally introduce so many chemicals into my tank as it just increases the risk of having harmful effects on my shrimp. This is one of the many reasons why I do not keep my shrimp with fish. Thanks again for the update.

Did you change all of the sponges in the filter at once? That could cause your tank to go through cycling again....keep a close eye on your water parameters.

I'm with Neonshrimp on the chemicals issue....I don't add anything except water and dechlorinator.

Me too, but I will add salt for ick in a fish tank. . . (and then get it out of there ASAP when it is no longer necessary)

I know, it was a tricky decision - risk upsetting the bacterial balance or risk the chemicals leaching back into the water from the filter parts. hopefully there's enough friendly bacteria in the rest of the tank to keep the cycle going while the filter sorts itself out.
