Sponge Filter Questions

Hi Everyone,

I've been reading alot on the sponge filters for the shrimp tanks on this forum. I've also been looking at them on eBay... Please tell me how much work is involved with the filters and which ones are suggested, it's a 10 gallon tank... I sure do appreciate all the advice. Thanks so much!! -Debi

Hi Debi,

There is not much work/maintenance with a sponge filter. I just clean my filter once a month by swishing it in aged water from the tank right after a water change. It is then ready to do its job again.

There are so many type/brand/size of these filters. I would fiind one that fits well for the tank and setup you have in mind. They all work the same way and the amount of work depends on both the size os the filter and the airflow through the filter, for example a large filter with a few air bubbles going through it will do about the same filtering (GPH) as a small filter with a lot of bubbles. You also want some surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow, this is why I swish and don't scrub when cleaning the sponge. Best wishes and hope you find the right one

Can anyone tell me what the followig means:

Aquarium filter size: 100 x 72 x 166 (mm)
AC: 220-240V- 50Hz
Power: 12W
Hmax: 0.8m
Qmax: 550L/h

This is where I am gettng confused.

100 x 72 x 166 (mm) is the Length, width, depth of the aquarium.
AC: 220-240V- 50Hz tell me it is for Europe
Hmax: 0.8m is how high it can push the water
Qmax: 550L/h is the flow in Liters per Hour.

It's actually the measurements for the filter itself. If that were the aquarium it would be truly tiny. 100 mm = 10 cm = 3.93 inches.

OK, that makes sense, any idea what the proper size would be needed for a 10 gallon? I wouldn't want to put a filter in that is too small or too large.

If you go to just about any on-line or brick pet store, they can pick out a good filter for you. The recommend them for various tank sizes.

I like HOB's that use sponge medium.

I run a sponge filter meant for a 20g in my 10g tank. The smallest of tiger shrimplets can swim without being jiggled by any current. Just make sure it'll fit in your tank ok.

Hi Everyone,

I think that this is the filter that I decided on:

It is rated up to a 25L Tank.

I assume that this one would be ok for the tank..

That filter will function well, I have seen them being used by seversl LFS's. The only thing is it will be sitting in the middle of the tank. So if you don't mind that then it is for you, if you want something that you can place in the corner and cover with plants then a corner sponge filter with suction cups would be my choice.

Here is a suction cup version that I think is interesting. I like it because it has two sponges so you could thoroughly clean one and still leave one full of bacteria as needed.

It is called the Oxygen Plus Bio-Filter 2. I have no personal experience with these but it is one type that I have seriously considered.
