In my own tank I have 2 amano shrimp with a slew of sword, Java fern, Java moss, and moss balls and have never had a problem with them taking chunks out of the plants.
But my mother recently purchased 2 Sagittaria platyphyllia for her tank and one of her amano's is just decimating them. Anyone know if this is normal? She also has a sword plant and some Java moss in the tank and they don't seem to be bothered.
Are amanos avid plant eaters?

I don't remember reading about amanos eating healthy leaves before. One possibilty is that the sag had arial leaves when you bought it. After submerging it, the sag started to shed the arial leaves to make room for aquatic leaves. The decaying leaves (even before they look like they are decaying) would be attractive to many shrimp.

Long nosed/red-nosed shrimp will utterly deciment Egeria najas if there's no other food but I've never seen an Ammano eat live/healthy plant tissue.cich wrote:I'm in a planted tank forum, wich much discussion about shrimp, and I've never heard of anything like amanos eating plants... I'd assume I would have if it's common at all.
This sag has always died back badly when I plant it, I think they're eating dead plant matter.
