Red Cherry Shrimp Dying

Post by jmccant »

Hi all,
I need some advice on my red cherry shrimp tank. My RCS and Malaysian Trumpet snails are dying. They are housed in a Fluval Ebi (7.7 gallons).
The water parameters are:
GH 180
KH 80
Ph 7.0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Ammonia .25

I know the ammonia level is elevated because it should be 0, but would .25 ammonia level kill off RCS and MTS? I don't know if that is the problem or maybe something else. Any advice/suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any level is too high for invertebrates, especially shrimp, even undetectable levels.

I have the same problem my red cherry shrimp 3 total were fine and I ordered 7 crystal red shrimp and they came in very cold water but alive with some subwassertang and 3 snails I didn't see at the time it started with my 2 amano shrimp turning blue and then a pale white on the inside only while still remaining blue and dies within a week. Of cource all but one of the crs I ordered died in the first night. So I have 3 cherrys and 1 crs all smaller and not yet adults and all 4 of the shrimp have been hiding and hardly visible and today thismorning I find one of my red cherrry shrimp lifeless still moving internaly but no reaction to touch and has a pale white inside of its tail its still red when I disgared it but looked to have what the amano's had and it seems to fast to be from cotton shrim disease. Also the night I got the crs I mistakenly added amonia sponge white rock materail to the filter thinking if there were any amonia that it would help, its like pure chemical and I think it helped kill the crystal reds the first night could it be that the cherry reds were more resilient and it just killed the one a few days later? And the rest are hiding? Could it be cotton disease and the amonia chemicals? I use only earth 2 o spring water and carbon otherwise could there be a difficiency of iodine or other please help I want to do well with these shrimp as me and the lfs owner would both benefit and I don't want any more to die...
