conductivity of water to shrimp

Post by stonefox »

It can surprise me that there isn't more focused on the conductivity of water to shrimp. It's hard to find information about different shrimp microSiemens values.

In many German sites where information is provided Ph, Kh, Gh values for each shrimp species are also reported TDS value of the water. (Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is the number of charged ions (minerals, salts and metals) which are dissolved in a given volume of water)

A fairly important factor for achieving the best conditions, particularly in order to get them to breeding.

Have read:
"Many of them who keeps shrimp, especially Asians, measuring only the conductivity meter and not the other values."

I have had and have been using a conductivity meter for years already. It can be a helpful tool. Having said that, there is no "target value" expressed in microsiemens that you must achieve for your shrimp to be happy. I used to live in NYC where my tap water came out of the tap as almost RO water at 70 microsiemens. Now that I am in San Diego my tap water comes out at around 600 to 800 microsiemens. The shrimp don't care either way and breed the same. Ph and KH are more important...but even with those parameters there are no target values. After all, there is no river or lake in the world that has always constant ph, kh and conductivity readings.

As for Germans...it's not like all information coming from Germany is accurate. I should know since I know the German invertebrate "scene" very well (I am originally from Germany, German being my "native tongue") and they know me, too. I can guarantee you that, although Germany has way more hobbyists than the US, there are still very few actual "experts", or, rather, people who actually know what they are doing. One has to be really careful about utilizing google translations of German websites, as much (most?) gets lost in translation, or worse, gets twisted around and assumes a different meaning.

Thanks for your reply.

When it comes to Sulawesi, I think that microSiemens is useful to get the values that they live under in the wild.

The contacts I have, and that keeps Sulawesi shrimp, do all to measure their water conductivity, and as I've read, there are several breeders in Asia, which only goes up in conductivity and not all the other values.

Do you know of breeders of Sulawesi types and has some good website, so hear me from you.

You're welcome.

Conductivity measurements are completely irrelevant when it comes to shrimp...yes, even sulawesi shrimp. My 6 species of sualawesi shrimp have no idea that the conductivity of my tap water here is nowhere close to the level of their natural habitats...yet they live and breed..prolificly, too.

Lots of people do lots of unnecessary things. Just because they are successful at keeping and breeding a certain shrimp species does not mean that the unnecessary things that they do are the reason for their success...even if they themselves believe so and tell others. :-D

Yes, I do. You're talking to one. And I hear my website isn't that bad, either. Joking aside...I will soon put up species descriptions and a whole lot more information about various types of sulawesi shrimp ( and non-sulawesi shrimp....and also update pretty much all other species descriptions, articles...etc.). I just added the species description for Caridina sulawesi...so go check it out:
