wow! for the first time ever, i see eggs on my amanos. for the longest time, i was wondering when they were going to berry and they finally have. now to research the next step.... CONGRATS to me! WOOHOO!

i have never set up a brackish environment before. i have the aquarium salt that i need to add, but how much salt per gallon will make it brackish? also, i have a 5.5G and a 10G tank in which to raise them. which tank size would be ideal? does the tank need to heated? i will be getting a sponge filter to add to the tank today.

Retardo, this is what i have done. First you need to know when the eggs are ready. The eggs will hatch out at about 3-4 weeks. You will be able to tell when the eggs are ready because they will have a black speck in the eggs. Once you see this move the shrimp to a separate tank/Large pickle jar. You will want to run some air bubbles in there or the new larva will not last long. When the larva hatch move them to the 5.5 gallon tank. i do this with a turkey baster. Gradually increase the Tanks Specific gravity to 1.020-1.022. To measure Specific gravity buy a hydrometer. Specific gravity will help you determine how much salt you have in your tank. To feed the new larva i use yeast...when they get older you can feed them smashed algea weafers or i use Golden pearls, which i fouund work well. I also keep a themometer in the tank. I heat the tank with a light that hangs over the tank

thanx, br for the info. i will definitely try and make this work.

i finally made the connection that the the dark stuff under the "neck" of the momma shrimp were the eggs before they were fertilized and moved to the abdomen/swimmerettes.

i do have a followup question tho... this morning the eggs were all a dark green color, which i had expected, but now some of them are white in color. is this normal? it hasn't even been 24hours yet.

also, should the tank already be "brackish" when i move the momma shrimp in there? do i need to do any gradual acclimation?

edit: nvm.... i'm reading the article and some of my questions are being answered.

here's a question i have after reading that article: he recommends using instant ocean to create the brackish environment. is it necessary? do you get better results using instant ocean in place of aquarium salt?

It does not have to be "instant ocean" but it should be a "ocean salt" mix. "Aquarium salt" does not have the right composition usually.

I would gradually increase the salt. The article says dump them right in 1.020 but I just lost 30 larva that way....Gradually is the best IMHO
