Hi everyone,
I am sorry if this is a repeat of a previous post. I just cant find the post I made earlier.
I have recreated my shrimp tank. The set up is like my last one but this time less gravel. For this set up I will be ordering snails compared to the last one I did not.
Questions
I am also a bit confused with the "Buffer." I was wondering do I leave the egg shells in the tank at all times or do I have to take them out before the shrimps are introduced in to the new tank. I have looked at the forms and found that not every one used egg shells as a buffer, however when they do it is not mentioned if it is removed or left in the tank.
If a coral is used as a buffer or shells like snail shells is it OK to use the brackish water snails as a buffer or am I wrong?
I have included pictures below thank you for taking the time to read my post.

I like the tank. Hexagon? The lava looks good also. I do not know the chemistry well but coral and old shells dissolve in the water and keep the pH stable. Th ph of water after reef salt is added is usually a pH of eight. I rarely if ever check my ph. I think egg shells look ugly. The coral or egg shells are kept in the tank.

Oh thank you. The tank I got from wal-mart. I just got some crush coral from the pet-co today and this rock that one of the employees told me about. He is a marine biologist. He told me that this a type of lace rock that will help build good bacteria, and the crush coral should be removed when the desire PH is achieved. He also mentioned that it should be in a type of bag or some sort that can drain the water content easier. This is what he told me so far; however, I would like to get your option on the information he provided.
P.S I found out what that small patch of white slimy stuff was form my tank that lead to the death of the shrimp. It is a bacteria that is from salt water and can be treated. The white stuff sucks all the oxygen from the tank and when you get it tested you would not know. It is found hidden in the gravel.

Ok..that tank with the lace rock is good enough. The lace rock will buffer the water sufficiently (and, yes, leave it in there all the time). Now don't touch anything!
It looks perfectly fine. And don't listen to pet store employees trying to tell you how to set up shrimp tanks... Also, live snails don't don't buffer water. Only dead snail shells do.
