When I first got the algae over a year ago, it was a lighter green, very robust looking, and covered a huge area.
Now it's mostly dark green with a lot of the strips white/whitening, and has settled into a clump near the bottom of the bowl. Is it dead? Should I take it out of there?
Your photo worried me. The macro algae looked grey which would not be good. Dark green, white areas i have that. I find that the algae holds air bubbles and floats while other times no bubbles and sinks. The white areas on mine look bleached out from my lighting, a led puck light. However with that said I hope Mustafa chimes in as he has greater experience with the algae.
It's hard to tell from the picture what's going on. I definitely see healthy looking parts on top. I would not worry about it being light or dark green...the macroalga just adjusts to whatever light you have. As for taking it out...I wouldn't. It won't harm anything. Even if most of your macroalgae dies, it has the ability to come back from the tiniest piece once conditions in your tanks are more to its liking.
I have watched as my algae has recovered from a 'dead mass' in the center, I suggest just sitting back and letting it do it's thing and all will be better soon. I noticed my Algae stays at a pretty constant size as well and I believe it may be because of the lack of sufficient nutrients and size of my tank...
