So why do Supershrimp have super lifespans?
Are there any theories as to why they live so much longer than other shrimp (and most invertebrates for that matter), especially in such harsh water conditions? Is it possibly a way to ensure breeding success if conditions are not right for long periods for larva to survive? Course this is a guess with no real basis, indeed it seems like if there is enough food for the adults then there should be enough for the larva right?

I've seen someone keeping them in a large jar.. Water all green with algae.. And there are berried shrimps and floating larvas. Amazing huh?Varanus wrote:Are there any theories as to why they live so much longer than other shrimp (and most invertebrates for that matter), especially in such harsh water conditions? I'm assuming these guys breed only when the conditions are right. So when they're able breed in that kind of water condition, it says a lot.
If you're able to kill these tough guys, you must be really darn bad at keeping them

I think i'd live a long life if i lived in hawaii.

It would be great to find a genetic basis for their longevity! They don't seem to have any known diseases either. And it's especially mind-boggling how long they live if one considers that they don't sleep at all. Having said that..they are, for the most part, subterranean/cave-dwelling creatures and such creatures tend to have much longer life-spans than surface dwellers. One reason may be that food is scarce and you need to stay alive much longer to find enough food to reproduce.
