Biofilm? Black spots on shrimp? Changing tank?

Post by soongie »

Hi! I got a few questions.

1) There is this white film floating on top of the water. Is it biofilm?
Or is it powder from coral? I dropped a few coral chunks in there without washing them...
How do I clean it? Do I want to get rid of it?

2) Also, is it normal for some shrimp to turn black? I cannot figure out how to attach pictures to this post, but it has black spots on the back. Previously she was pale (from shipment) --> bright red -->black spots on the back. I have black sand; is that why? Is she just adapting to the substrate? Is she EATING the substrate?

3) I want to move the shrimp to another tank but don't have any more saltwater to make brackish water. Can I just put new substrate and decorations in Tank B, pour some of Tank A's water, move the shrimp, pour the rest of Tank A's water and sand in there? Or should I get some more saltwater and cycle it properly? I only have 10 shrimp.

4) Also, any tips on adding water without having everything flying? Every time I top off the tank with distilled water, the sand and shrimp go flying about... I feel bad for the little critters, and the tank looks soooo bad now with a hole in the sand.

Gracias Gamsaheyo Arigato Grazie Danke Spaseeba Thanks! :-D

I believe it’s biofilm in there. That’s what my snails grazed on all the time. They hang upside down eating it. For the coral, you should of washed it. There’s no way really to do it now since it’s already in there. If it’s live or dirty it could contaminate the water. Your shrimp will not eat the substrate. I don’t know why it’s changing color. To upload a pic you just click on attachment and then choose it on your phone. Then wait for it to upload before hitting submit. I would not want to transfer to another tank unless it’s an emergency. Too much stress on them in my opinion. To add water without disturbing everything, you tilt and pour it slowly. That’s what I do to top it off and it doesn’t disturb anything. Hope this helps.

Ohhhhhhh I see. Like so?

Good to know! I will wash everything else I introduce starting next time.

I will try tilting it the next time I add water.

So the shrimp shouldn’t be moved to a new tank ever? o___o

It’s interesting how they are all different colors. Some are bright red, some are pink, pale, black-ish..

Thank you so much Nellyville41 :-) !!! :-)

When I add water I pour it slowly over the back of a spoon like I'm making a black+tan and it doesn't disturb much :)
