New Tank Inquiry: Protruding Above Water
Salutations! Been lurking in the forum for a while and finally taking the plunge into cycling a tank myself. Just had a quick question about my setup. I have some leaves from a felt plant slightly rising above the waterline. Is there any negative repercussion to this? I want to ensure I don't jeapordize anything with this process. Appreciate any responses in advance!

Haha. Well, I enjoy the look of them and they're safe for aquarium use so I'd like to leave them in. I was just making sure having them slightly above the water was okay. I couldn't think of any downside but I'm very new to this so I don't want to do anything wrong! Sorry if it's a silly question.

What is a felt plant? Is it a plant made of fabric?

Oh ! I read it as “leaves FELL”. Doh. Sorry!! If it’s aquarium safe you’ll be fine

It's just a softer version of the typical plastic aquarium-safe plants. Here's the link:

I know people here don't recommend putting in real plants since they don't do well in brackish water. My question wasn't so much about the artificial plants themselves (I recall reading here that anything labelled as safe for aquariums is okay and provides additional surfaces for algae growth), it was more about any negative side effects to keeping something above the water. Appreciate the replies nonetheless!

Oh I see! Thanks for the link. I guess the only potential drawback I see is it prevents you from being able to cover the top of your tank. Having a cover is beneficial for reducing evaporation and also for preventing dust and environmental pollutants from entering your tank. Aerosolized cleaning products are the bane of these small habitats.

That's a good point. I figured leaving it uncovered for cycling would be better since folks on here say it helps algae grow a bit quicker, but I might want to cover it in the future once I have it inhabited. Thankfully I don't use any cleaning or aerosol products with chemicals! The good thing about these particular plants is they're very bendable so I might still be able to cover it if need be. I will report back after testing the theory.Super Jess wrote: ↑Tue May 08, 2018 5:41 pm Oh I see! Thanks for the link. Update: I was able to slide a lid overtop with ease! Doing so didn't even disturb the water below—the tips of the plant just slightly bend aside as the lid slips on. Looks like I can have the best of both worlds. Thank you for your insight!
