Two months to the day from seeing first floaters

Post by JoeG »

Well it’s been two months since I saw my first floaters and there are now new floaters. First I saw one a couple days ago, then it was up to 10 yesterday, and now today I have counted 31! I have only seen one berried shrimp over the past couple of weeks and she was loaded with eggs. I figured there was going to be about 20 young but this is wild. I started with 31 shrimp two years ago the first of December. This one female just doubled the population. I haven’t seen the female today so I don’t know if she will be dropping anymore, or if I may have missed a few while counting, but I’m very pleased with all the new floaters. :D

I also saw one of the two month old babies walking on one of the lava rocks. They are still very tiny and not easy to spot. That first batch was 15 floaters from I think two mothers.

Wow! 31 babies from one tiny shrimp? I actually have my doubts that there was only one mom but if there was, again, wow.

I am now seeing 2 juvenile shrimp swimming and grazing and still 3 that are floating. They seem to be trying to swim more in a forward direction though. If I wind up with 5 juveniles out of the 7 floaters I saw, I'll be happy with that. I read that the survival rate of the larvae is largely dependent on the salinity of the water with more surviving at higher levels.

I just spotted the mom and her swimmerettes are still distended from all the fry. As hard as it is to believe she still has two more left to shed! It was remarkable to see how many eggs she was holding. They were in a good size mound under her and they were always nice and tight against her. She is also a nice size shrimp.

Here are some of the floaters:

Congrats! The thing about these shrimp is that you won't *ever* see all berried females at the same time. You may see two different ones at different times of the day and think you only have one female. On average these shrimp have about 10-20 eggs...I may have seen a few females who had one or two more than 20. 31 would be an incredible record by far! And you said there are two more larvae on her, which would make the total 33. Either you have a super giant Supershrimp :-D , or you have multiple berried females in your tank. :)

By the way, stop feeding! You have more than enough algae growing in your tank to last many, many months.

How is your tank doing now?
