Re-adding calcium carbonate

Post by chelseahix »

I set up my small 2-gallon tank following the site's guide. Everything is great! I used the WonderShell to add calcium carbonate. How often will I need to add more?

Years, or never. Unless you do water changes the calcium will stay in the system even after the object dissolves.
What other minerals are in the Wonder shell you used?

Thanks very much for the response. It made sense to me that I would not need to add more, but wanted to double-check. Oddly, there's no ingredient information on the WonderShell packaging, but the tank seems happy and healthy, so I think I'm all good!

Calcium by itself doesn't help keep the pH high, which is what we need in our Supershrimp tanks. You need carbonate, and in this case calcium carbonate. The wonder shell product does not contain calcium carbonate as far as I know. You need some real calcium carbonate, and then you don't ever really have to "refill". :)
