What the heck did I just see??

Post by SuperProofer »

Hello all,

I just witnessed the most bizarre thing I've ever seen in one of my tanks...

One of my snails (purchased from Mustafa), I thought it was eating my substrate - I use small white pebbles. But then I noticed it was the opposite. The "pebbles" were coming out of the snail! Must have kicked out about 15 or 20 of them. They were all sticking together. But it seems physically impossible given the size of the pebbles as a whole related to the size of the snail. Unless it's a tardis and bigger on the inside, the physical mass was easily 2 or 3 times larger than the snail. Then, it rolled them all up like a snowball and just crawled away. Now they're just laying on the surface and the shrimp are picking at them. I'd take a picture but they look exactly like my sand so you really can't see anything.

Do these guys lay eggs? I've never in my years of having shrimp/snails ever seen this before.

Edit: this is one of the pieces it spit out. It's pretty zoomed in, but this one alone is as big if not bigger than the snail itself. And there we multiples of these.

Update: today there is a tiny microscopic snail in the tank. Guessing babies were had, but not sure it's related to the original issue as all I've read says these things give live birth, not eggs...probably a coincidence.
