(seemingly) Thriving Tank Then 3 Deaths

Post by LittlePenny »

Hi everyone!
It has been a long time since I posted.
I recently started a new tank (back in April) and added shrimp in June once there was a visible biofilm. I had a few shrimp from a previous tank that I wanted to give a better life to.
The tank has been set up with Instant Ocean marine salt, distilled water, rocks from the previous tank, and aragonite for substrate. Everything got boiled before going in the tank during setup. Salinity is 1.008, water temp is 72. A few Malaysian snails (who recently had babies) and a light. Things were turning green, and the shrimp seemed happy for months, and then recently over the last 3 weeks, I've had 3 deaths. The shrimp were on their sides, moving around a little, and a few hours later, I found them dead. (One at a time, over the last few weeks).
I am so confused. I have had opae ula for about 8 years now, and once the tank is established, I have never had any issues, so I don't know what is causing this. The remaining 18 shrimps are happy, red, and active, constantly grazing. There are copepods that I can see close to the surface of the water.
Nothing got sprayed in the room, no changes to the tank or its contents.

Please help! Any ideas what could be causing this all of a sudden? And what should I do? I don't want to lose any more shrimps.

Thank you kindly!

You've touched on all of the main points to consider. Are the tanks in similar environments in your dwelling?
