Re: Is this how the first red bees looked?
Heh, I was searching for more info on this, and noticed I had already made a post about this phenomenon almost a year ago :P http://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2990 It wasn't long after this that she shrimp in my ten gallon tank started turning blue as well. My theory on th...

Re: Is this how the first red bees looked?
I'm quite certain they are. I bought my cherries almost two years ago, and have not added any livestock to this tank since then, except for the addition of three tiger shrimp a few months ago. (The tigers also turned rather blue) http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1945/imgp1157z.jpg Yes, I have blue s...

Re: Is this how the first red bees looked?
That's what I had previously assumed. We have very hard water here - lots of interesting minerals

Re: Is this how the first red bees looked?
I have learned that blue on a bumblebee shrimp indicates it is stressed by something. Does anyone else have more info on this? I regularly have red cherries develop blue patterns. http://i614.photobucket.com/albums/tt225/CACTUSBASTARD/IMGP1720-2.jpg They seem healthy, are active, breed well... I ha...

New Hikari shrimp food (with copper)
Hikari is launching a new food specifically for freshwater shrimp. I found it surprising that they explicitly stated that it contains copper. Here is the link where I read about it: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=1993 The editor mentions the copper content: "Dieta...

Re: Gonochoric Triops Longicaudatus
They do reproduce asexually if you don't have a male and female. I've never heard of any Triops eggs hatching without being dried out first, although certain brine shrimp eggs will. My last batch of Triops were Triops Cancriformis, and after they were done, I continued to use the tank for shrimp. Th...

Re: Hydra
I adore Hydra, easily as much as I like shrimp. I'm dead serious, they're amazing creatures! I don't know how healthy their sting is for a baby shrimp, but the original poster did say the Hydra were in a tank full of Amanos anyway. So nothing to worry about, they will die off once they start running...

Re: invert trivia
I had never heard that myself, but the wikipedia also uses "hen" and "cock" for female and male lobsters

Edit:
Here is another source listing female lobsters (and octopus) as "hens

Re: Help with an ID, please?
I'm sorry if digging up old posts is frowned upon, but wanted to at least confirm the ID of the M. Lanchesteri in last set of photos here. I don't know anything about the shrimp in the first picture though... As far as the feathered swimmerettes, I think most, if not all shrimp have feathered pleopo...

Also, a search reveals a lot of people asking for IDs on their M. Lanchesteri

Re: I thought I bought Ghost Shrimp
Mustafa, do you plan on adding the Lanchesteri to the Shrimp Varieties page? I think they deserve a spot there personally, as they are my favourite macro. Their behavior is very interesting without being quite as aggressive as say red claw macros, and at least the ones I've kept tended to swim aroun...

Re: new sulawesi
Why cover the driftwood in silicone? As far as hard water tolerant plants, I will share my experience: My water is very hard, and light levels are fairly high, though would probably be considered moderate by most planted tank people (I hardly consider my tanks "planted" though). Nutrient l...

Geordie John, just in case you weren't already aware, the survival rate of all those larvae in freshwater will be 0%
If you want to try and raise them, you'll have to set up a brackish tank for them.

Re: Fittings. Nylon, brass, polyethylene etc.
Very interesting and informative reply; thank you! :smt006 Very few fittings get replaced until they actually start leaking (which takes severe degradation). So the fact that the lead is originally encapsulated in plastic is not exactly the best solution. I know titanium dioxide is used as white pig...
