Re: Brown Spiky Algae?
That seems to be a lot of algae growing in there? What was your source of water? How long has this tank been set up? I used distilled water mixed with fish store salt water. Tank sat for maybe 2-3 months before I added the shrimp. The shrimp have now been in there for a month. It wasn’t this bad wh...

Brown Spiky Algae?
Hello, so my tank seems to be growing a lot of brown algae on the walls, substrate, and rocks. Some of it even looks like spikes or thorns that are starting to grow and wanted to see if anyone could identify this for me and tell me if it's a problem? Also does my dark green algae look like its dead?...

Re: How are the shrimp mailed?
I am thinking about purchasing all the materials to get started. Can I order the shrimp as well and let them hang out in whatever they are shipped in, or move them to a temporary jar until their permanent home has had time to cycle? Thanks everyone! I tried this. I ordered some from petshrimp.com a...

Using RO Water with added Calcium Carbonate
I recently bought a reverse osmosis water filtration system that adds high purity calcium carbonate to create alkaline water. I was wondering if this would be safe or even preferred when creating brackish water for the Opae Ula aquariums? My tanks are currently using store bought distilled water so ...

Re: 0.50 Ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10ppm nitrates after cycle?
These shrimp have a very small bioload, but all the same adding 100 all at once may be what caused the ammonia spike (assuming you also tried adding 100 when you mentioned they all died, the 10 in that case being a typo). A 10 gallon tank can support 100 shrimp sure, but adding them all at once may...

Re: 0.50 Ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10ppm nitrates after cycle?
It wasn’t a typo. I have a 10 gallon tank so I figured I could fit 100 with room to spare. I will probably be testing the tank first with a smaller amount of shrimp to start though if I can ever get the ammonia levels to go down. I use the API liquid test kit. Also I can’t remember exactly what I di...

How to skin a sea fan?
Ive been reading that sea fans have skin that must be removed before adding them to a tank as the skin will decompose over time and foul the water. I recently bought some that look like the kind in the original ecospheres as I think the simplicity and design is pretty. However I’m not sure if they a...

0.50 Ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10ppm nitrates after cycle?
Hi, Ive been trying to get a tank set up for a long time now but originally was having difficulty with getting the ammonia started. I had left my tank alone for a while and it developed grown a green/brownish film on the glass and substrate which was suppose to indicate it was ready. I tried adding ...
