Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp
I have done fishless cycling and like it. I use snails in all my tanks so there's not much food leftover to get nasty. I haven't tried using a cocktail shrimp or fish flesh. You can also use pure ammonia in a bottle, but that stuff is getting harder and harder to locate. These days, most ammonia for...

Re: Finally
I have tried, But with a little point-n-shoot, They are just a blur. boy, do I know that feeling  I have to try a technique I read about in the Photography section of this forum - using a magnifying glass to bring the image IN FRONT of the glass, as well as make it larger. I tried with a cheap...

Re: Halocaridina rubra
MTS don't need a very gradual acclimation. Mustafa taught me to put them in 1/3 salt, 2/3's salt, then full salt. You wait each time until they move & feed. It takes about a week and they are in full salt. yeah, I expect that since they are from tidal zones they can handle quite a change in sal...

Re: Sick RCS?!
Phew, glad you seem to have worked out the problem. 'Wild' or decorative rocks are not the best idea sometimes, especially if one doesn't know what they're made of before placing them in the tank. I'd personally test such rocks out in fish-only setups before trying it in a shrimp breeding tank :wink...

Re: underground vs. sponge filter.. which works better for you?
another vote for sponge filters here. As Newjohn said, they provide an excellent surface for shrimp to graze on. There are ALWAYS shrimp eating on my sponge filters because of the stuff that grows on the sponges, as well as whatever gets stuck to it from the small amount of suction it generates. I c...

Re: Halocaridina rubra
If we want to have live rock in the tank should the water be full strength salt water? you know, I was actually thinking of just using plain lava rock instead of actual live rock. That way, it's closer to what they actually live in, in the wild. Plus there are lots of crags and nooks for bacteria a...

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp
Thanks for the good information and tips, I will definately look into the nitrogen cycle and other basics some more :D you're most welcome. Great job and attitude toward doing some more research on your own. If you have any more questions after combing the internet (and there are LOTS of great reso...

Re: Halocaridina rubra
thanks, pal. I think, perhaps more than anything, it just replicates their natural environment better and makes them feel secure enough to start breeding.Neonshrimp wrote:Great information. Maybe this is how the mating process workds in their natural habitat.

Re: Halocaridina rubra
had mine for a while now about 2 months but all they do is eat and swim arround. no babies so far. yeah, they're slow to start breeding and once they do, they aren't very prolific (only 8 eggs or so at a time). Keeping them alive for a few months is definitely a step in the right direction! I'm sur...

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp
how to introduce them to a cycled tank without "shocking" their system. A lot of discussions on freeing these guys from EcoSpheres seem to suggest that they can be switched to a new tank with very little "shock" but I want to make sure! with regards to this, and your question ab...

Re: Sick RCS?!
they seem to be further inside her, rather than being held in place my the swimmerettes. ugh, that sounds awful. From your description, maybe she is just swelling PAST the eggs thus making them appear to be farther up? I don't know. Blegh, there are parasites which will cause flesh to swell, like w...

Re: Sick RCS?!
oh my, that sounds awful. Did that happen to them while they were still alive? Just making sure it wasn't bloating and color changing due to death (though I've not really seen dead shrimp bloat much either). Shrimp-keeping, and therefore the diseases of shrimp especially in captivity, is still in it...

Re: Green Stone Shrimp
yeah, it can be difficult to get an even sex-ratio. Especially since many green shrimp are still imported and wild-caught from Asia. Mine were. In an order of 25 adult green shrimp, there were only 2 males. The reason for this is probably because females are larger and easier to catch for the collec...
