Got a Tiger By Mistake-Hi All, My First Post

Post by leto3113 »

I recently purchased my first 4 cherry red shrimp from a local pet store and once I got them home I realized I have 3 female cherries(with awesome color, by the way) and one Tiger. I have scoured this website and from what I can gather the tiger won't hybridize with the Cherries, is this correct? Assuming the Tiger is a male, if there is even a remote chance of them hybridizing I can move him to another tank with ease. What would you do?
Mustafa, I am paranoid about purchasing from you at this time because of the cold weather right now and my inability to be at home when the delivery would arrive. When spring has sprung I will definitely be buying things from you. I love this site, thanks for all the information!

Welcome to the forum!

I don't think that tigers and cheries can breed. If you check the Shrim Varieties link at the top of the page you'll see that cherries are Neocaridina denticulata while tigers are a Caridina species. A hybrid between two separate genus is not very likely and even it it happened could not produce fertile offspring, at least that is what I was always taught.

I wouldn't worry about having Mustaffa ship you shrimp, even in this weather. He packs for the ages and uses a nice heat pack. Cherries are also pretty cold hearty. Check this link:

Badflash is right. Tiger shrimp and red cherry shrimp most definitely won't hybridize. As for shipping and cold weather, if shrimp (or fish) are packaged properly instead of skimpily then they will do fine even if they are shipped to frigid areas of the country in the dead of winter. I've been shipping all winter and they all arrive happy and healthy.

I can speak for that. I live in Northern New Hampshire, my shrimp where left by the mail guy on my (open) front porch in the freezing cold for almost the entire day before someone got home and discovered them (they were left in the morning, they were discovered a little after 3) and they were ABSOLUTELY FINE.
