Re: Snails keep dying
Have you tested your water parameters? I wonder if some kind of contaminant is in that water, given that you are keeping snails alive just fine in your home tank. I'd mix a triple batch of new water, sieve out the shrimp and put them aside, dump the tank water, rinse the tank and everything from the...

Huh....looks sorta like a bristle worm ? People who run full saltwater tanks might be able to tell you.

Re: Avoid disaster, just do what Mustafa says.
Hi Mustafa! That tank is doing just fine...apparently all that was necessary was that I should freak out, and then everything would be fine. No more deaths. All the shrimp are red and properly active. The white water mold disappeared almost immediately. The chaeto still has a place with tiny white d...

las they are too tiny to photograph. But they don't seem to have gotten any bigger or more numerous. Curious.

Just don't stick the grow light adjacent to the tank and don't leave it on all the time -- at a rough guess I'd say keep it at least 6 ft away, and turn it off at bedtime.
Are you sure your salinity is okay? Is it the same as when the chaeto was flourishing?

Re: Re-adding calcium carbonate
Years, or never. Unless you do water changes the calcium will stay in the system even after the object dissolves.

Re: Algae is dying - do I need to buy more?
With so few shrimp to cycle nutrients to the algae, you may be right. But if there are MTS in there, they should provide nutrients. Normally if the available nutrients are low the chaeto stabilizes at a smaller size but stays deep green. The OP notes that the tank was okay until it was moved to a ro...

and now a few long fine strands like cobweb are growing in the tank also. Some kind of fungus I suppose.

Avoid disaster, just do what Mustafa says.
I will never ever again do anything other than what Mustafa suggests or buy stuff from anyone else. My shrimp are dying (7 out of 40 in the past month) and my Chaeto has areas with tiny white flecks or tiny dead segments -- can't tell without a microscope. There are tiny transparent colorless things...

Re: Shrimp mating behavior?
Well, maybe? You can't really tell until you see female shrimp carrying eggs.
Was there a freshly molted shell nearby? Mating occurs soon after the female molts.

Re: How many shrimp for a 10 gallon tank
You don't *need* a smaller tank but it would look better. 10 gallons will look awfully empty with 12 shrimp. 10 gallons could easily support several *hundred* opae ula!

tiny spots on chaeto
There are tiny tiny white or pale spots on the filaments of my chaeto. Reproductive structures? Shrimp bites? Some kind of organism?
