Unfortunately, it is usually the neglect of Walmart personnel, or malicious customers. The systems Walmart uses are, I think, MARS systems, which are excellent when used propoerly.

A) calcium carbonate isn't soluble in neutral pH water. B) Most tap water contains adequate (or excessive) mineral sfor shrimp anyway. C) I wouoldn't buy anything from Asia packaged in plastic or paper for my own consumption, or for sensitive organisms. I work in customs and you wouldn't believe the...

That's great advice. Yeah, I've read that as long as you have ANY nitrates, plants will be happy, so 2ppm is my cieling. As for plants that don't need ferts...not gonna happen with an Amano style aquarium, CO2 and high light...you NEED ferts, and fish, for some reason, don't provide enough in this t...

THanks...experience is as good as documentation. It's just that I too have read the typical "the only nitrate that is safe is zero nitrate", followed by the guy who says "I get mating shrimp in 50ppm nitrate" about 100 times. There is research on Daphnia and Ceriodaphnia that pro...

Thanks Shady for sharing your experience. It is very informative and sorry to hear about your loss of amano shrimp. If you could recommend a conditioner for effectiveness and value what would it be? I use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Conditioner if I am treating tap water. It is very concentr...

Adding nitrate

I searched, but since this forum is primarily shrimp, and not plant tanks with shrimp, I couold not find much on additives to raise nitrate for heavily planted tanks. I have heavily planted tanks with Amanos and high light and CO2 injection/pH controllers. My plants frequently experience die offs or...

I used to work for a leading company that made aquarium water conditioners and other products. There is certainly a lot of hype and marketing around aquarium additives, and I agree with Mustafa (in other posts) in that adding a product to eliminate something is BS, however most detoxify things prett...

Saw my C. japonica breed - now has eggs

Several weeks ago, I had the opportunity to see my Amanos breed. I don't know if this has been documented here or in literature, but it was fascinating: The female climbed up onto a piece of driftwood and at the same time, all of the males started darting around the tank like nuts. THen they all beg...

That's a LOT of light for a 10 gallon. Almost any plant with that much light, and no CO2 supplementation will do poorly, or at the very least, no better than in lower light. THat said, a tall, "messy" moss...well, Java Moss is probably the easiest to keep, but you will need to lower the li...

Why not use KCl instead of KNO3? I've used this with great results in plant tanks...no experience with shrimp, but chloride is a beneficial ion for respiration in fishes...should be OK for shrimp.

What kind of shrimp? In my experience, anything but the smallest tetras and Rasboras will eat mature Red Cherries, and ANY fish will probably go at the juveniles. I would go with something bigger than Bee shrimp or cherries if you want to keep fish.

most shrimp are omnivores. Most omnivores feed first on what best satisfies their nuritional needs, namely protein and carbohydrates. Algae doesn't always offer the best nutritional value, although I think it can be a complete source of nutrients for Amanos.

That's a good point about shrimp prefering other food, and dying algae. My shrimp seem to go after everything from decaying plant leaves to their own moults and poop before touching the algae. However, I have also noticed that when my algae begins to turn grey, they seem to attack it more than whn i...

I wonder since this an inorganic form of Nitrate then it might not affect them the same way as Organic Nitrate????? Not sure what forms of organic nitrate you are referring to, but NO3 nitrate is the one of concern. Since the mechanism of nitrate uptake is through tissues and gills, I don't think y...

Best way to lower pH is to add water with a lower KH. Buffers will work, but they will chemically be "battling" against your carbonates, and will eventually wear out. THey also add excessive nutrients to the water. RO water is fine for creating a lower KH, as long as you add small amounts ...
