Re: Two years going strong…but no babies
Yep, that's the most likely issue. It can take a long time for the nutrients to get used up by the plants/aglae depending on how "dirty" the substrate was...we're talking months or even years in extreme cases. The reason why the shrimp don't breed is simple...they just don't feel comfortable ...

Re: Snails keep dying
It's really hard to say what's going on, but shrimp and snails get affected by different chemicals sometimes. I've had this happen too, where the snails did not make it but the shrimp were unaffected by whatever was in the water. Also, the snails are a little more cold sensitive than the shrimp, so ...

Congrats! That's a super detailed picture of a larva. What equipment did you use to take it? Macro lens or just a phone?

Re: Not sure what type of algae this is
Interesting, it's obviously some species of hair/string algae, but there are so many of them so it will be super hard to figure out what it is unless you start putting some strings under the microscope and dive deep into the scientific literature.

Re: Berried shrimp chased by other shrimp
Replying a little late here, but I wouldn't worry about shrimp chasing each other. These shrimp are incapable of hurting each other and the chasing stops eventually. Most of the time it's males chasing females for obvious reasons. I hope you added more prepared brackish water in the meantime. Don't ...

Re: Not sure what type of algae this is
I have seen similar stuff before in nature, but I have no idea what it is. In the pictures it appears to be unattached. Does it just float around like that or was it attached to something before? Does it feel soft or is it kind of rough to the touch? Can you rip it apart easily?

Re: Unusual algae - Opinions re: species?
From the pictures it's hard to say what kind of algae it is. It may not even be algae, but a type of cyanobacterium. Did this just spontaneously happen or did you introduce something from another tank or natural environment into your tank?

Re: Two years going strong…but no babies
Did you wash the substrate before putting it in? Did you rinse or soak the rocks? If not, then that's where the nutrients are coming from. Unfortunately, there's really nothing you can do besides waiting it out. Just don't feed at all until all the algae are gone. Keep thinning out the macroalgae as ...

Re: Shrimp mating behavior?
It's pre-mating behavior. The actual mating happens right after a femal molts, and it's belly to belly.

Re: Re-adding calcium carbonate
Calcium by itself doesn't help keep the pH high, which is what we need in our Supershrimp tanks. You need carbonate, and in this case calcium carbonate. The wonder shell product does not contain calcium carbonate as far as I know. You need some real calcium carbonate, and then you don't ever really ...

Re: Too Much Light?
Yes, a marine tank led will pretty much kill every plant in your tank, as it already did. You only need an LED that's about 4-8 watts. I'd err on the side of caution and just get a 4-5 watt light. You don't need anything fancy or aquarium specific any household LED will do. Also, see this thread for ...
